NESS Wärmetechnik at the VAIS Year-End Event 2025
Innovation and Competitiveness in Focus: NESS Wärmetechnik at the VAIS Year-End Event 2025
On December 4, 2025, the year-end event of VAIS took place in Düsseldorf. Under the guiding theme Innovation and Competitiveness for a Strong Industry, representatives from business, academia, associations, and industry came together to discuss current challenges and future perspectives for Germany as an industrial location.
The full-day event featured a high-caliber panel of speakers. Among the keynote speakers were Prof. Jens Südekum (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf), Dr. Altfeld, Dr. Mennerich, and Daniela Jansen. In their presentations, they addressed topics such as the challenging state of industry, the urgent need for action, and the current progress in expanding hydrogen infrastructure.
Fast-Response Biomass as a Building Block for a Competitive Industry
Dominik Weidler also took part as a speaker, representing NESS Wärmetechnik GmbH, and delivered a presentation on
“Fast-Response Biomass with Pulverized Fuel Combustion and Internal Product Recycling.”
In his talk, he demonstrated how modern biomass systems can make a significant contribution to the flexibility of industrial energy systems – particularly in applications with rapidly changing heat demand or where surplus energy from renewable sources can be effectively integrated.
“Fast-response biomass systems make it possible to efficiently utilize renewable surplus energy while providing heat on demand – a clear competitive advantage for energy-intensive industries,” said Dominik Weidler.
A special focus was placed on pulverized fuel combustion. By switching off the fuel supply, the heat source can be eliminated immediately – an important advantage compared to more inert systems. In addition, Weidler presented the concept of internal product recycling. Production residues with a suitable calorific value can be processed, ground, and reused as fuel. This reduces transport efforts, lowers fuel costs, and increases the overall economic efficiency of the system.

Bridging Technologies and New Perspectives
Beyond the focus on biomass, the event offered numerous additional impulses. Particularly interesting was the discussion on converting decommissioned coal-fired power plants into gas-fired power plants. This approach could save years of construction time and hundreds of millions of euros in investment costs and is seen by many participants as an interesting bridging technology that allows existing infrastructure to continue being used efficiently.
Thank You for a Strong Exchange
Our sincere thanks go to the VAIS team – especially Dr. Dietmar Kestner, Linda Kaiser, and Arne Harrendorf – for the excellent organization and the open, constructive exchange.
We are very pleased to be a member of VAIS and to actively contribute to shaping the industrial transformation.
Together, we are working on solutions for a competitive and future-proof industry.
