Thermal oil contains small solid particles, e.g. shavings and metal particles from the internal pipe surfaces, wear from pumps and fittings and oxidation and reaction products of the oil. Some of these particles are too small for the strainers in front of pumps and control valves.
These small particles in the oil affect reliability and effeciency of the thermal oil system in the long term. Contaminations and deposits reduce the flow and increase wear. In the worst case this results in defect pumps, seals and valves and the core function – heat transfer – is massively impaired.
In general, the degree of contamination can be determined with an oil analysis. In the analysis, the contamination is recorded according to DIN (Conradson value). This standard specifies a method for determining the carbon residue.
Especially at a system start-up the Conradson value could be high, as e.g. production-related shavings and metal particles from the inner walls of the pipes. Therefore, it is advisable to install a fine filter system from the beginning.
Due to the modular design of the filter systems, existing systems can be retrofitted easily, without interfering existing processes.
